As I write this, I find myself in a contemplative mood. Looking back, I see how ambitious I once was—always wanting more. A bigger bank account, a bigger house, and an ever-expanding lifestyle to match my ever-expanding ego. But for what? I lost it all during the 2008 Great Recession.
Before I could rebuild, I realized I needed to approach life differently. First, I had to tame my ego by becoming aware of my true self—the one buried beneath all the noise. That process uncovered deep-seated insecurities built on lies I had long believed about myself.
Next, I became crystal clear on the purpose I wanted to build my life around. Since then, most of my decisions—both personal and professional—have aligned with that purpose. The result? Greater peace, and consequently, greater prosperity.
I’ve learned that the most successful businesses are grounded in a strong sense of purpose. Likewise, a truly fulfilling life is driven by purpose and balanced between professional ambition and personal well-being. No amount of business success can make up for failure at home.
- A large bank account is worthless if it’s not invested in adding value.
- A large home is meaningless if it’s filled with strife.
- A large ego is destructive if it suffocates our authentic self.
By all means, pursue success—but make sure your path is purpose-driven and allows space for balance, peace, and joy.
